Self-portrait with window #30 (2017)
-
In Self-portrait with window no. 30 (2017), the light that passes through the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova brings into focus the relationship between presence and absence embedded in the building’s history. Constructed in the seventeenth century on elevated ground to replace the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, repeatedly affected by flooding from the Mondego River. Completed in 1696 under the patronage of King João IV, it went on to house the community of the Poor Clares. The space, shaped by successive periods of use and abandonment, retains material traces of this interrupted continuity. The figure of the author appears as a vestige, almost absorbed by the architecture, like a ghost of memory, evoking an absent presence within the relationship between time, space, and transformation.
