Portraits of Someone

Standing Time #33 (2013)

  • The photograph places two inhabitants in the center of a mountainous landscape in Paredes do Rio, in the municipality of Montalegre, in the Trás-os-Montes region of Portugal. Taken in March, the image reflects the persistent cold of the season. Wrapped in the traditional woolen cloaks (burel) of Trás-os-Montes, their bodies are protected by a fabric that responds to the climate and reflects a material culture shaped by altitude and tradition. A hoe rises between them, structuring the image and signaling preparation for another day of work in the fields. The mountainous scenery does not function as a backdrop, but as an extension of daily life. Through restrained expressions and a firm posture, the image conveys a slow rhythm of existence, where identity emerges through constant practice and a continuous relationship between body and place.
