Road Trip - Portugal

Roadside Herd #5 (2003)

  • This photograph depicts a roadside scene in Algoso, in the municipality of Vimioso, northeastern Portugal. A woman walks along the edge of a paved road, holding a wooden walking stick. A large sheepdog is beside her on the roadside, looking ahead. Behind them, several goats move along a low stone wall, parallel to the road. The animals occupy a narrow strip between the wall and the slope, keeping their distance from traffic. Road markings and reflective posts delineate the asphalt, while dry vegetation and exposed rocks frame the landscape. The composition aligns people, animals, and infrastructure in the same linear space. The photograph captures a moment of herding carried out near the road, in which daily rural activity occurs parallel to road traffic.
