Pilgrimage Notes
As Georges Duby considers, the pilgrimages are the most perfect and accepted of all forms of asceticism that Christianity (11th century) offered to the Knights, anxious for salvation.

As Georges Duby mentions in L'an mil [1], during the early period of the Middle Ages, Europe falls into a severe depression due to various invasions from the North: on one hand-carried out by the Germans settled in Spain (Visigoths), in Italy (Ostrogoths), North Africa (Vandals) and Savoy (Burgundians), and the other hand, by the Francs, Anglo-Saxons and Lombards, who conquered respectively, Gaul, England and the North of Italy. These invasions broke down the development and progress taken by the Roman Empire, preserved mainly until the death of Charles the Great in 814.
From this moment on, with the decadence of the Carolingian Empire and after those mentioned invasions, we continue to have a society characterized by wilderness, where looting, violence, war, despair, disease, and fear took over the communities in general and disadvantaged populations, subdued by the power of some groups (nobles, warlords and clergy) united by ties of kinship.
As we approach the year 1000, the power structure is increasingly splitting and becoming hierarchical (tripartite society: nobility, clergy, common folk), which contributes to creating a world dominated by confrontations that began to be previewed.
As Duby continues to refer within this environment of fear, the mentioned year begins to be characterized as a tragic one when various events occur: earthquakes, the appearance of comets in the sky and snake-shaped figures. If we add to these events, today regarded as natural phenomena, the religious beliefs – often opportunistically divulged towards the less educated people to strengthen the power of the ruling classes – we easily understand the myth of the end of the world, the coming of the Antichrist or the Apocalypse (which precede the day of judgment).
The clergy takes over an interlocutor's role between the Earth (and its inhabitants—kings, Knights, Peasants) and Heaven, also linking the world of the living and the dead. They read the signs given by comets, eclipses [2], shooting stars, and epidemics and consider them messages sent by God.
All these messages, which needed to be understood, were immediately associated with evil and nature's disasters, originating with fear, the worst of them, the Apocalypse. Also, human beings needed to purify themselves and do penance, considering the forgiveness of their sins and thus a place in paradise. Some decide to live as monks, renouncing material life, pleasure, and family ties in an attempt to purify their souls. Others marched towards the Promised Land, Rome or Santiago de Compostela (Saint James of Compostela).
As Duby considers, pilgrimages are the most perfect and accepted of all forms of asceticism [3] that Christianity (11th century) offered to the Knights anxious for salvation. In addition, this phenomenon functions as a case study to clarify the eternal search for paradise by the pilgrim, who was haunted by the religious doctrine called millinerism and worried about redeeming himself from his sins and reaching the heavenly Jerusalem after death.
It should further be emphasized that the pilgrimages eventually determine the typology and architectural forms of Romanesque churches, which are constructed according to a plan that allows the pilgrim to walk inside without compromising the religious events. The carved tympanum discloses a message associated with the theme of the Last Judgment, even if a few people could read it, but where the image turns out to be a powerful vehicle for evangelization. Similarly, the chapiters became privileged means for disseminating Christian iconography, which contributed to characterizing medieval aesthetics.
In future posts, we will emphasize iconographic and typological aspects when divulging some pictures of the churches that lie along our travels through the pilgrimage paths.
Nowadays, the meaning of those travels to Santiago de Compostela (Saint James of Compostela) has different explanations according to each person who performs it. Therefore, we will leave here some testimonials of those who are currently able to complete these itineraries.

Como refere Georges Duby, no livro L’an mil [1], neste período da Idade Média, a Europa entra numa grave depressão, em muito motivada pelas vagas de invasores oriundos do Norte – a primeira, de povos germânicos que se instalaram em Espanha (Visigodos), na Itália (Ostrogodos), no Norte de África (Vândalos) e na Sabóia (Burgúndios); a segunda, perpetrada pelos Francos, Anglo-Saxões e Lombardos, que conquistaram respectivamente a Gália, a Inglaterra e o Norte de Itália – invasões que põem fim a um tempo de desenvolvimento e de progresso, que o império romano tinha alcançado e que se manteve principalmente até à morte de Carlos Magno, em 814.
A partir deste momento, com o império carolíngio em decadência, e após as duas vagas invasoras, voltamos a ter como tónica dominante na sociedade uma atitude selvagem em que o saque, a violência, a guerra, o desespero, as doenças e o medo se apoderavam das comunidades em geral e das populações mais desfavorecidas, submetidas ao poder de alguns grupos (nobres, senhores da guerra e clero), unidos por laços de parentesco.
À medida que nos aproximamos do ano mil, os poderes começam a ficar cada vez mais fraccionados e hierarquizados (sociedade tripartida: nobreza, clero, povo), o que contribui para que todos os factores acima referidos produzam um mundo dominado por confrontos que se começavam a antever.
É neste ambiente de medo, como continua a referir Duby, que o ano mil se começa a associar a um ano trágico, quando diversos acontecimentos se sucedem: tremores de terra, aparecimento no céu de cometas e de figuras em forma de serpentes. Se juntarmos a estes acontecimentos, hoje entendidos como fenómenos naturais, as crenças religiosas — muitas vezes oportunamente lançadas junto dos mais incultos para reforçar o poder das classes dominantes — facilmente se percebe o mito do fim do mundo, da vinda do Anticristo ou do Apocalipse, que antecederia o dia do Juízo Final.
Nesta atmosfera mística, de espera pelo momento final, o clero assume papel de interlocutor entre o mundo dos homens (fossem eles reis, cavaleiros ou camponeses) e o reino dos Céus. Da mesma forma, estabelece também a ponte entre o mundo dos vivos e o dos mortos, interpretando cometas, eclipses [2], estrelas cadentes e epidemias como sinais enviados por Deus.
Todas estas mensagens, que necessitavam de ser compreendidas, eram rapidamente associadas ao mal e geravam o medo, porque anunciavam catástrofes, sendo a pior delas o apocalipse, havendo a necessidade de os homens se purificarem e penitenciarem para que obtivessem o perdão dos seus pecados e, desta forma, um lugar no Paraíso. Alguns decidem viver como monges, abandonando tudo o que era material, renunciando ao prazer, aos laços familiares, numa tentativa de purificarem as almas. Outros marcham em direcção à Terra Prometida, a Roma ou a Santiago de Compostela.
As peregrinações são, como considera Georges Duby, a mais perfeita e mais bem aceite das formas de ascese [3] que o Cristianismo do século XI propunha aos cavaleiros ansiosos pela salvação. Além disso, as peregrinações constituem em si mesmo fenómenos essenciais para se compreender a eterna procura do Paraíso por parte do peregrino que, com o fenómeno do milenarismo, se preocupava em se redimir dos seus pecados e alcançar a Jerusalém Celeste após a morte.
Importa ainda notar que as peregrinações acabaram por determinar a tipologia e as formas arquitectónicas das igrejas românicas, que passam a ser construídas segundo uma planta que permite ao peregrino caminhar no interior dos edifícios sem comprometer os ofícios religiosos. Nos tímpanos esculpidos divulga-se uma mensagem associada ao tema do Juízo Final, num tempo em que poucos sabiam ler, mas onde a imagem acaba por ser um poderoso veículo de evangelização. Da mesma forma, os capitéis tornam-se meios privilegiados para a divulgação de toda uma iconografia cristã, que iria contribuir para caracterizar a estética medieval.
É também sobre estes aspectos, tipológicos e iconográficos, que iremos dar destaque em futuros posts, quando divulgarmos algumas das igrejas que se encontram ao longo dos caminhos de peregrinação por nós percorridos.
Nos nossos dias, o sentido para a realização da viagem até Santiago de Compostela é encontrada em cada pessoa que a realiza e, por isso, tentaremos aqui deixar alguns testemunhos de peregrinos que actualmente fazem esses itinerários.
