Portraits of Someone

Short moments #39 (2006)

  • This photograph was taken near Arcachon, on the Atlantic coast of France. The image captures a moment of leisure, structured in part by play. A child looks at a ball suspended in the air, their body paralysed by expectation, while two adults stand nearby, occupied with a simple, practical action. The ball seems momentarily still, freezing the flow of action and interrupting the passage of time. The sea forms a calm horizon behind them, placing the scene in a holiday setting. Nothing progresses; nothing is resolved. The photograph retains this interval, where movement pauses and leisure becomes visible as a fragile moment, briefly disconnected from duration — from the continuous unfolding of actions that would normally allow the scene to move forward.
