The vertigo of departure dissolves into a sudden, dense silence inside the cabin. A few kilometres from the cliffs of Cabo da Roca, the constant, hypnotic vibration of the engine and the friction of tyres against asphalt replace the roar of the Atlantic wind. Within this confined space, the true scale of the journey takes on a physical dimension. The vehicle is no longer a project waiting in the garage; it has become an island, a solitary laboratory where the body must quickly learn to negotiate its new spatial limits.

Driving on the open road forces an immediate confrontation with the rhythm of time. The hurried pace of life collapses inside the vehicle. On the road, distance no longer responds to the abstract metrics of the clock or conventional time, but to the gradual mutation of light reflected on the dashboard and the fatigue accumulating in the shoulders. Light now dictates the rhythm and every activity of the day.

To advance is to learn to inhabit this new slowness, this new time, this new space.

On this first stage, every movement at the wheel is not yet automatic; it demands attention and feels rigid. The body attempts to adapt to the scale of a larger vehicle than the one it has always driven; though the control mechanisms remain unchanged — the same pedals, the same steering wheel —, muscle memory must recalibrate its physical response to these familiar commands. The invisible archive built over months of reading and research remains present, yet it no longer rules the initial cartography of the journey. Confronted with the physical reality of the road, all preparation recedes into the background, allowing the weight of the territory to assert itself.

The journey has begun, and its first lesson demands an absolute surrender to the discipline of the horizon — a commitment to the systematic record of the territory and the close description of the visible, drawing a visual catalogue of the road where writing accompanies the photographic gesture of framing and describing.

But can the eye limit itself to recording the surface of the world, forgetting our own references and the time and space that run through it?

Or will the body, incapable of any neutrality, insist on imposing a human intention against the blind habituation of its own cultural and theoretical archive, rediscovering its own memory within the invisible?

O Princípio da Viagem — parte VII

A vertigem da partida dissolve-se num silêncio súbito e denso dentro da cabine. A escassos quilómetros das falésias do Cabo da Roca, o rugido do vento atlântico é substituído pela vibração constante e hipnótica do motor e pela fricção dos pneus contra o asfalto. Dentro deste espaço confinado, a verdadeira escala da viagem ganha uma dimensão física. O veículo já não é um projeto à espera na garagem; converteu-se numa ilha, um laboratório solitário onde o corpo tem de aprender rapidamente a negociar os seus novos limites espaciais.

Conduzir em estrada aberta força um confronto imediato com o ritmo do tempo. A velocidade apressada da vida colapsa no interior do veículo. Na estrada, a distância já não se mede pelas métricas abstratas do relógio, pelo tempo convencional, mas pela mutação gradual da luz refletida no tablier e pela fadiga que se acumula nos ombros. Agora é a luz que marca o ritmo e todas as atividades em cada dia.

Avançar é aprender a habitar esta nova lentidão, este novo tempo, este novo espaço.

Nesta primeira etapa, cada movimento ao volante ainda não é automático; exige atenção e parece rígido. O corpo tenta adaptar-se à escala de um veículo maior do que aquele que sempre conduziu; embora os mecanismos de controlo sejam os mesmos de sempre — os mesmos pedais, o mesmo volante —, a memória muscular tem de recalibrar a resposta física a estes comandos familiares. O arquivo invisível construído ao longo de meses de leitura e de pesquisas permanece presente, mas já não comanda de forma absoluta a cartografia inicial da viagem. Confrontada com a realidade física da estrada, toda a preparação recua para segundo plano, permitindo que a importância do território se afirme.

A viagem começou, e a sua primeira lição é a rendição absoluta à disciplina do horizonte — um compromisso com o registo sistemático do território e com a descrição atenta do visível, desenhando um catálogo visual da estrada onde a escrita acompanha o gesto fotográfico de enquadrar e descrever.

Mas poderá o olho limitar-se a registar a superfície do mundo, esquecendo as nossas próprias referências e o tempo e o espaço que o atravessam?
Ou insistirá o corpo, incapaz de qualquer neutralidade, em impor uma intenção humana contra a habituação cega do seu próprio arquivo cultural e teórico, redescobrindo no invisível a sua própria memória?
